What we throw away, and why

Occurrence data is messier than it looks. Every record below is real, published, and wrong — so the ingest job drops it and logs exactly what it dropped:

  • Museum specimens carrying the museum's coordinates. An Ohio State specimen placed in Florida; an Akita Prefectural Museum specimen in Japan.
  • Centroid georeferencing. Records whose only locality was "Australia" get stamped on the geographic centre of the continent — which is desert, where platypus cannot live.
  • Placeholder dates. Two records dated 1599, two centuries before the species was described.

The current filter is a range heuristic, not a true land mask. It removes the desert cluster but wouldn't catch a point dropped just offshore. A proper fix is a point-in-polygon test against the IUCN range polygon.
